Is the Room Alert 3E compatible with GMail SMTP?
There are effectively two answers here. If you use regular GMail then the answer is no. GMail only supports encrypted connections that the Room Alert 3E cannot do. There are a couple of workarounds outlined below. If you are a G Suite user, then you may be able to use your Room Alert 3E.
GMail itself only supplies an encrypted SMTP server and rejects all connection attempts that are not encrypted. There are a couple of workarounds provided below:
- Use the free Avtech Device ManageR software installed on a PC or server. It is able to send email alerts via TLS among lots of other things;
- Use the Avtech RoomAlert.com cloud based service to send your alerts. RoomAlert.com sends the email using its own SMTP server so you don't need to worry about how it sends your email.
According to this Send email from a printer, scanner, or app G Suite knowledge base article, G Suite provides a relay SMTP server that can send email without encryption. However, you will only be able to send emails to people with GMail accounts and you may have to whitelist the device if you don't wish to use the server anonymously.
