Packetyzer - Global Options
Customizing the Packetyzer Packet Capture
Global Options
Global options allows you to set defaults that apply to all packet captures.
Note: You can also set options for each separate capture window using the Change Capture Options button.
Global
Resolve MAC addresses
Tick this box if you want the software will attempt to replace Media Access Control (MAC) addresses by names.
Resolve network addresses
Tick this box if you want the software will attempt to replace network addresses by names.
Resolve transport names
Tick this box if you want the software will attempt to replace transport addresses by names.
Ask before closing session
Tick this box if you want the software to offer you the option of saving captures before the software shuts down.
Default Capture
Default Capture options allows you to set defaults that apply to the current capture.
Adapter
Allows you to select the adapter to use to perform the capture. If more than one adapter is available select one from the drop down list. Click on the required adapter to select it.
Capture name
Allows you to specify a name for the capture file.
Limit each packet to
Allows you to limit the amount of data captured in each packet. Limiting the length of each packet makes the capture file smaller (or collects more packets in a fixed size buffer) and speeds collection on a busy network.
Note: When tracking network problems most faults are identified in the packet headers rather than in the user data so it is not usually required to collect user data.
Capture packets in promiscuous mode
Promiscuous mode allows the adapter to capture all the packets on the segment no matter what the addresses. Switch this Off if you only want to capture packets in and out of the local machine.
Automatic scrolling during capture
Allows the Packet List Pane to scroll during capture confirming that new packets are being captured.
Note: On busy networks this may slow capture down. If you find that packets are missed switch this option off.
Limit total capture to xx kilobytes
Allows you to specify an amount of space to set aside for the capture files.
Reuse capture buffer when it is full
Click this if you want the buffer to be reused. This is known as a circular buffer. Once the buffer is filled and a new packet arrives, the first packet is replaced by the new one, then the second and so on. See also Global Options, Global.
Protocol Options
Allows you to set any protocol specific parameters and options. Defaults are set for all options.
For example in IP v4 the TOS field was originally used to request the Type of Service required, but is often used today as the Differentiated Services field. Setting the option here allows you to decide how you want the field decoded.
WLAN Options
Allows you to set any Wireless LAN specific parameters and options.
