NetPort Installation Guide

The NetPort Ethernet to Serial adaptor allows any serial device to become network accessable. In this guide we will use the NetPort Adaptor to connect the Sensatronics EM1/E4/E16/CM16 serial configuration port to the network.

You’ll need the following software for this guide:

Step 1 - NetPort Device Configuration

XPort Installer Unit Selected

Open XPort Installer and click on the ‘Search’ button to find all available NetPort Adaptors. Now select the NetPort Adaptor you want to configure.

At this point you may want to change the device Gateway and Subnet to match your network you can do this via the right properties grid. You may also want to change the IP Address¹ of the NetPort Adaptor, this is done by clicking on the ‘Assign IP’ button.

Once you have completed making changes to the device you must click on the ‘Update’ button to commit the changes to the NetPort Adaptor.

¹ - NetPort Adaptors are DHCP enabled

Step 2 - NetPort Port Configuration

XPort Installer Unit Ports

With the NetPort adaptor device still selected click on ‘Ports’ in the right properties grid, then click on the ‘…’ button to enter the ‘Port Collection Editor’.

XPort Installer Unit Port Setup

From within ‘Port Collection Editor’ select the port you want to edit.

Firstly set ‘Accept Passive Connection’ to ‘Yes’ (if not already), now set ‘Local Port’, we recommended that you set this to 14001 for port 1 (14002 for port 2 etc…).

Now set the serial settings, for the Sensatronics EM1/E4/E16/CM16 serial configuration port settings are as follows
Set ‘Baud Rate’ to ‘_9600’
Set ‘Data Bits’ to ‘_8’
Set ‘Flow Control’ to ‘None’
Set ‘Parity’ to &lsquonone;None’
Set ‘Stop Bits’ to ‘_1’

Now click the ‘Ok’ to accept the changes, and then click on the ‘Update’ button to commit the changes to the NetPort Adaptor.

You have now configured the NetPort Adaptor to talk to the Sensatronics EM1/E4/E16/CM16 serial configuration port.

Step 3 - Com Redirector Configuration

Once you have successfully installed Com Redirector you need to create a Virtual Com Port.

Com Redirector Main Screen Com Redirector Port Setup

Firstly you need to select which COM Ports you want Com Redirector to redirect, you do this by clicking the ‘Com Setup’ button which will open ‘Port Setup’.

Select the Com Port/s you want to redirect, in this case Com 3, and click the ‘Ok’ button.

Com Redirector Port Select Com Redirector IP Service Setup

Now select the Com Port you want to redirect from the ‘Port Configuration’ drop down and click the ‘Add IP’ button which will open ‘IP Service Setup’.

Enter the IP Address of the NetPort Adaptor as the ‘Host’, and set the ‘TCPPort’ to 3001². Click the ‘Ok’ button to accept the changes.

Click ‘Save’ to save the new Com Port redirect and ‘Close’ to exit.

²To calculate the ‘TCPPort’ you need to subtract 11000 from the ‘Local Port’ of the Port on the NetPort Adaptor.
in this example you are connecting Port 1 on the NetPort Adaptor, this port has the ‘Local Port’ set to 14001.
If, for example, you wanted to connect to Port 2 on the NetPort Adaptor and you had set the ‘Local Port’ for Port 2 to 14002, then the ‘TCPPort’ will need to be set to 3002.

Step 4 - Creating ‘Virtual Com Port’

Finally you need to create a ‘Virtual Com Port’, this is done by opening Control Panel and double-clicking Phone and Modem Options.

Select the Modems tab and click the Add button

Make sure that the ‘Don’t detect my modem; I will select it from a list’ is ticked and click the ‘Next’ button.

From the ‘Manufacturers Models’ list select a ‘Standard 9600 bps Modem’ and click the ‘Next’ button.

For ‘On which ports do you want to install it?’ Make sure that you have COM3 selected and click ‘Next’.

You should now have a ‘Virtual Com Port’ installed.

NOTE: make sure the selected modems ‘Maximum Port Speed’ is the same as the Baud Rate on the NetPort Adaptors Port you are connecting with.

Step 5 - Connecting

The final step is connecting to the device via COM3 using, for example, HyperTerminal.
