Q: I have a holiday home 300miles away and want to control the electric storage heaters remotely so that they can be switched off when the house is empty and switched on when someone is in. It would also be helpful if the temperature could be viewed on a co

You should be able to do most of what you need with the GSM Power Switch. The maximum loading on the switch is 13A or 3Kw. To switch on a heavy load it would be best to connect the switch to a relay and use the relay to switch the heaters on and off. As the Master user you would receive a text message on every change of state of the switch. For example, if power is lost or reestablished and at a preset temperature. You can turn the heater off or on automatically at a preset temperature. You could set up your Guest as one of the Secondary users and allow them to text the switch to turn the heaters on at any time, giving them manual control. Again you would be notified when they did this. The unit is connected permanently to the mains so the internal battery is always charged. If mains power is lost you would receive a text message.

Q: Is the wireless antenna external to the unit?

No the antenna is built-in to the unit. The temperature sensor is what you see on the side of the unit. Provision of a good signal is required for this, or any GSM device, to work.  It may be worth trying SIMs from different Service Providers, sometimes the coverage is better for one provider than for another.
