@Wieland - world economies seem to be picking up speed so I don't think things are as bad as perhaps they look. The chances are that a recovery that is generating jobs will start in the next year or so. Look to the bleeding edge, where people with experience don't have as big an edge on you and become an expert. Don't blame yourself though, in the end you don't control the economy and can only do so much to control your own situation.

The whole economy is insane when you think deeply about it. We produce products so consumers can use them, then they throw away what they don't use and thus we have to either recycle it or off it goes into a rubbish pitt. Then the whole cycle starts again, raw materials-process resources-produce product-consume-End of product life-waste management.

This whole system is screwed up, and the bankers get $ billions in bonuses for screwing our lives up. As an Mechanical Engineer i can't get a job becuase most companies want someone with experience rather than a fresh college graduate. I'm hoping i can get a job soon. Otherwise i will try to start my own business, don't know if i have what it takes to become an entrepreneur. But it beats the hell out of waiting for someone to give me a job!

@Matt - agree with the pigeon holing thing. It is hard to get out of a role once you're in it. But on the flip side, when there are no guarantees that a new grad will get any role in the industry, it may be the best choice. There will be a lot of people having some very hard choices at the moment, I really feel for them.

Good post. I've always hated the catch-22 of companies only hiring people with experience, and no one wanting to hire anyone without it.

I'm tempted to say that you should take any peripherally technical job available, like tech support. I'm also tempted to say avoid that like the plague, lest you be pigeonholed into that role for the rest of your career. It took some of my friends years to break out of that mold. I myself only escaped through good luck. I worked tech support at an ISP in West Virginia and slid into the admin route.

I guess from my experience, if you can't find a job doing what you want, find another job in a company that also employs people who are doing what you want to do.
