It has been close to a week since the website upgrade. After a fairly rocky start, caused by some voodoo JBoss configuration, the site seems to have settled down nicely.

In many ways I have been reminded of the old DOS days of constant memory configuration problems. Our server has a reasonable lump of memory, around 2GB, but Java was running out of memory even though less than half of the system memory was consumed. Modify the configuration, pass in some obscure parameter upping the right kind of memory and things work okay. I hate that sort of thing. In my book, a system should consume as much memory as it needs unless I specifically limit it. Java, JBoss and the rest seem to be designed with the opposite ethos. By default, reserve a small amount of memory, if memory becomes exhausted, fail. You then have reconfigure to set aside more memory.

Planning for the next site upgrade started around a month ago. The main focus will be on your security. The 3D Secure system will be enabled for cards that have been 3D secure enabled. 3D Secure should make your online transactions more secure for you. It is kinda like an online version of Chip & Pin. We have a hard deadline for 3D Secure of the end of June so you’ll be seeing this soon.

We will also be introducing an Extended Validation Certificate (EVC). Regular SSL certificates are secured to a particular domain. EVC are secured to a company and a website. So, for instance, with a regular SSL certificate you can pass off a website as another better known website. With EVC so called phishing attacks will be more difficult, because the company behind the website has to be verified as legitimate.

Buyers guides will also be introduced into a least one product category. We know that some customers want the terms used, and the technology in general, to be explained more clearly. Once we have a solution that works reasonably well, we will roll it out over the entire site. Though, that will likely take a number of site releases to cover the entire site.
