Update 1: Zenoss has a forum / mailing list system. Both interoperate together so a post to one goes automatically into the other
Popularity: 44% [?]

Jack Hughes's wry observations of the tech industry from the bottom looking up.
A small clarification, Zenoss’ forums and mailing lists are linked, so we have both. You can use either the forum or mail interface and the results are cross-posted. We find it useful for people who prefer one interface over another, plus you get the advantage of the externally browsable and searchable interface of the forums and the convenience of a mailing list.
Thanks,

@Matt - thanks for the feedback … I have now made the correction
Quote | Posted July 18, 2008, 2:45 pmHi,
Quote | Posted July 23, 2008, 9:58 amDid you check/compare these products in-depth?
I mean, did you run some pilot and analyze it?
thanks,
Vitaly
@Vitaly - I don’t have the facilities to run a full pilot. I am not attempting to perform a review.
Quote | Posted July 25, 2008, 1:07 pmI am currently building a comparison document on OpenNMS, Nagios and Zenoss. It set off as a short comparison but is turning into a much more in-depth document. This is currently very much a Work In Progress but anyone who would like to look at the draft, it’s on our website at
http://www.skills-1st.co.uk/papers/jane/open_source_mgmt_options.pdf
I repeat - this is not complete. I still have the performance sections to do and the nice, pithy conclusions! I envisage the first few sections and the last few sections being used to get quick product comparisons and the big sections on each of the 3 products to be used as more in-depth reference material.
Any input gratefully accepted though.

@Jane - given your “big 4″ experience, it would be interesting to see a comparison with those.
Quote | Posted August 4, 2008, 1:53 pmHi Jack,
Quote | Posted August 4, 2008, 2:32 pmPerhaps I will get some comparisons with the big commercial products into those nice pithy conclusions! Anyone else particularly interested in that? I can’t easily do all 4 but I do have working experience with HP and IBM.
Cheers,
Jane
The first draft of the Nagios, OpenNMS, Zenoss paper is now complete and available at http://www.skills-1st.co.uk/papers/jane/open_source_mgmt_options.pdf .
Comments much appreciated. Jack - no comments to compare against the big 4 yet - that might be a separate paper…..

I have updated and finalised this paper in the light of comments received - thanks to those of you who supplied input!
The final version is at the same URL - http://www.skills-1st.co.uk/papers/jane/open_source_mgmt_options.pdf
You can tell you have the final version because it doesn’t have “Draft” on the front and the date is September 30th.
I have had various comments - the favourites being “How about including Hyperic and Zabbix” and “How about comparing against the commercial offerings”.
I would be interested in any votes for either of these suggestions.
Cheers,

Thanks for the update Jane. I have blogged about it so I hope you get the attention you deserve. Must have been a lot of work. Congrats on your appearance with Cote & John in the IT management podcast I enjoyed it immensely.
